What Was Life Like When Jesus Was Born?

Imagine traveling a long, long way just to be counted! Jesus’s parents, Mary and Joseph, had to travel to Bethlehem for a census ordered by the Roman Emperor, Caesar Augustus. Because there was no room at the inn, the story goes that Jesus was born in a humble stable where animals stayed, and his first bed was a manger—a feeding trough!

Not long after he was born, an event happened that sounded like something out of a movie! King Herod, who was ruling at the time, wanted to find the baby Jesus to harm him. So, Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus had to quickly flee and escape all the way to Egypt until it was safe to return.

After returning, the family settled in a small town called Nazareth. Jesus grew up there, working as a carpenter alongside his father, Joseph, until he was about 30 years old!

Mind-Blowing Fact!

Even as a young boy, Jesus was super smart! When he was only 12 years old, he visited the great Temple in Jerusalem and amazed the learned teachers there with his understanding and answers about God's word.

The Amazing Teachings of Jesus

When Jesus started his public teaching, he gathered a close group of twelve main followers called disciples. He traveled around teaching people about the 'Kingdom of God' and sharing messages that were easy to understand by using simple stories called parables.

One of his most famous lessons is called the Sermon on the Mount, which teaches people how to live a kind, caring, and spiritual life. He taught things like loving your neighbor and even loving your enemies!

He didn't just talk about being good; he also showed incredible compassion. Jesus performed many miracles—he helped people who were sick, gave sight to the blind, and helped those who were struggling.
